"There are many with scars from their human lives. Most erase them or change form to hide them, but I know one who openly wears a thick scar on his neck."

Jasper squeezed her hand and the landscape around them disappeared. They reemerged in a more earthlike setting, wind and sky and trees...and a battle.
They stood on a small rise, again beneath a tree, but empty cultivated fields spread out before them to the horizon. Two armies on foot collided near a small stream. Victoria heard the screams, the shouting and the clash of metal on leather and the sickening thud of bodies falling to the ground. She put a hand to her mouth.
Jasper nodded. "War is Hell. There is a lot of it down here."
"He is in there?" There were hundreds of soldiers. They appeared to be Romans and Gauls. She knew from her history books that this war had waged for many years.
"Yes. He is always here."
"Am I supposed to go down there?"
"I wouldn't. I'd wait until it was over and then walk among the dead and wounded."
"I don't want to find him dead or wounded."
Jasper looked up at her. "Why didn't you say so?"
"Why should I have to say so? I am trying to find him alive."
Jasper stared at her. "You are in Hell. No one here is alive."

Fantastic story-telling

The story story starts off with a bang with one of Victoria's nightly visits by a demon. It has been happening for a while and she does not know why. Things start to change when he speaks to her for the first time and asks if she would do him a favor. He doesn't get around to asking her the actual favor and when something terrible happens to her at work she is left wondering if that event was somehow linked to his favor. Without warning and just as he starts to become interesting he does not come to her anymore. Victoria is drawn to him and sets out on a quest to find him.

The author is extremely talented, very well written and I loved all the characters. The writing style changes with the different eras which let's the story flow smoothly through the time travel. This book was very hard to put down.

Be warned, this book contains explicit sex, including rape, battlefield gore, time-travel and profound love.

Good storytelling

This was an interesting read. The author does a good job of transporting the reader to each of the specific previous former lives of herself and lover. I was pretty wrapped up in the book since it was quite the page turner. I also have to say the rape scene was terrifying. While Victoria's journey of self-discovery is thrilling, I wish there was a little more explanation about what the demon lover really is. How did the soul of Victoria's lover become a demon as he can shapeshift and also has recollection of his past lives? As a demon, how will they be able to be together in the future as Victoria is still a human? The ending was little abrupt and left me with a lot of open questions. Maybe there will be a sequel?

Disappointing ending

Interesting premise when I began the story, especially once I could see where the author was going with the plot. However, the ending is severely disappointing and a huge fizzle. Very glad I hadn't paid for this book.

Why Believing in Your Product Leads to Failure. "All too often, entrepreneurs fall in love with their product or technology, they ignore negative feedback from customers, and they spend years building a product based on a vision that no one else shares."

Why Having too Much Money Leads to Failure. "Money allowed the entrepreneurs to execute their flawed business plan rather than to stay laser focused on the market so that they could find the facts about what customers wanted and adjust accordingly."

Where Do Winning Innovations Come From? "The key difference... is not to just ask customers what they want but to deeply understand the customers--their motivations, their needs, and most important, the job they are trying to get done... Thomas Edison stated that `I find out what the world needs. Then I go ahead and try to invent it'."

As Ahlstrom points out, commitment of money is a very powerful validation. "The price your customers are willing to pay is the measure of the degree to which you have nailed the solution."

Fail Fast and Learn to Change. "By remembering to fail fast, you focus on rapidly testing your assumptions, iterating swiftly, and then, because you have less attachment, you can see when you need to abandon one approach in favor of a better approach."

Focus on Simplicity. "Somewhat counter-intuitively, simplifying increases customer adoption and reduces costs. Customers are attracted by simplicity and confused by complexity... Entrepreneurs should focus on developing the minimum feature set to close a customer purchase."

Without Question the Best Book for Entrepreneurs

Since 1995 I succeeded in creating two software startups without funding and failed in others. For the past several years I've read programming books hoping to find a technical edge, and entrepreneurial books to determine what I did wrong and what I must do to get it right the next time.

I concluded that more programming is pointless until I find the right idea and validate my business model, but the entire process wasn't clear to me.

Then I read, Nail It then Scale It. Complimentary to the book Boom Start, it is the best entrepreneurial book I've ever read. Within the first twenty pages I recognized my previous mistakes. Now I better understand the entire process of innovation, identifying deep customer pain, testing and validating solution hypotheses.

This book teaches the innovation and validation process from start to finish. By applying its best practices, l have the confidence I need to build the next big thing--one that delivers a simple, elegant solution that customers' want.

Five stars--I highly recommend it.

Must-read for every product innovator

Building products that people want is hard and costs lots of money (mostly because we miss the mark the first, and second, and third time around before we get it right). I read Nail It Then Scale It and it immediately resonated. As an entrepreneur I find myself constantly in product development mode. The steps outlined in the book cut time (50%+) and cost (80%+) out of our product development cycle. Nail It Then Scale It doesn't dance around theory, it dives right into the nuts and bolts of identifying need, and the step-by-step process of building a great product that will sell the moment it ships. Good entrepreneurs have solid product intuition - great entrepreneurs will follow Nail It Then Scale It and find out how to nail it the first time around. Great read - strongly recommended.

Best Comprehensive Book on American Dance

Wow. I'm not a dance expert, but we've have been avid attendees at fine dance company performances for 30 years—everything from classic ballet to folk dance. This book is such a fine companion for anybody who enjoys any type of performance dance— virtually everything I might expect to find is here, and it's already a standing feature on my coffee table. And I've just purchased a second copy to give to friends of ours who are also dance buffs. I can't recommend this highly enough. It's utterly comprehensive, and exhaustively illustrated. A fine, fine book.

US history, told through dancing styles.

I’m not a fan of dancing myself, but I loved this book. I portrays dancing styles as a way of studying the history of the USA, from the Colonial era to present. If you look at all the different styles, you’ll see that they reflect the norms and mores of the time, along with class distinctions and the nation’s economy.

The book starts with Native American dancing, which probably resembles the Jewish ones than European. The men and women danced separately, and it was usually ceremonial or religious in nature. The idea of men and women dancing together is something that originated in Europe, and came to the continent with European settlers. However the European dances would become a source of trouble, though humorous at the same time.
When the Louisiana Purchase was made in 1804, it brought French settlers under Anglo-American control, and the dances became a source of conflict. The French wanted the Quadrille, and the English-speakers wanted English country dances. The communities had to pass ordinances regarding dancing in public places, including one that limited English dances to 12 couples. They didn’t want to start a fight with the French by crowding the dance floor!

The book progresses with constant-changing styles that became common after the Civil War. New York City was home to the country’s best-known dancing school, owned by Edward Ferrero, who created the styles on his own. You could say he set the standards regarding dances, but he also was responsible for thousands of deaths. During the Civil War, Ferrero was put in charge of the New York troops, on the basis of his choreographing parade drills. He was drunk during the battle of Petersburg, and sent his men running into a crater, where they found themselves trapped and massacred by the Confederates. Ferrero’s incompetence in battle didn’t kill his career though; he made a fortune as a dance instructor after the war.

The dancing styles of the nation reflect the changing immigrations and attitudes towards others. Tap dancing came from the Irish jig, and thanks to Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, became popular with movie audiences. Swing dancing became popular in the Great Depression, as dance hall owners were under pressure to fill the space while charging as little as possible. Disco was imported from Europe, break dancing began as a non-combat competition between gangs, and MTV helped popularize hip-hop moves. Perhaps you could say that movies and TV were a major influence on styles in the USA?

I’m not going to give away anything else from this book, because it’s a pleasure to read and I wouldn’t want to ruin the experience. Biographies, photos, and all kinds of historical background are included.
