About the Author
Sally Lipsky’s academic background and work experiences have centered on public education–from elementary to the postsecondary levels. Upon graduation from the University of New Mexico (B.S. elementary education), she began her career as a Title I reading instructor with the Houston (TX) public school district. After earning a M.Ed. in reading education from Texas Southern University, she taught in the Pittsburgh (PA) public schools. She earned a Ph.D. in language communications and adult education from the University of Pittsburgh and continued her career at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where she has worked for over twenty years as a faculty member in the Developmental Studies Department, College of Education and Educational Technology. Her work involves coordinating academic support services and peer assistance programming; supervising paraprofessional peer educators; teaching first-year seminar courses and a peer educator training course; and developing promotional, evaluation, and outcomes assessment procedures. She has made numerous professional presentations and written about aspects of postsecondary learning, including the text College Study: The Essential Ingredients (in its second edition) published by Pearson Education. Furthermore, as a member of the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA), she has chaired the Learning & Study Skills Special Interest Group. As a member of the National Association for Developmental Education (NADE), she has chaired the Peer Assistance Programs Special Professional Interest Network. To this day, she remains fascinated with the process of learning and committed to the value of public education.

Find a style and stick to it

Any style guide’s purpose is to make writing understandable—with the possible exception of academic writing. Style Guide by The Economist offers sound advice for business writers, particularly for people writing articles.

Catch the attention of the reader and then get straight into the article. Do not spend several sentences clearing your throat.
Readers are interested in what you have to say. The way you say it will cause them to read on or give up.
Introduce facts as you tell the story.
Don’t tell readers what they should think, persuade them.

American business writers can learn much from this short book—despite its emphasis on British English.

This book is organized alphabetically. Listed under “P” we find the word propaganda, often mistakenly used as a synonym for lies. The accurate meaning is a “systematic effort to spread doctrine or opinions.”

This guide is full of opinions, mostly sensible, such as this one: Do not imagine that you can disguise the absence of thought with long words, stale metaphors, or the empty jargon of academics. Clarity matters. Articles have their foundation in ideas, analysis, and argument.

Style Guide wags its finger at times, even if what it says is good practice. Avoid using ought and should, it says. Don’t be chatty, over-familiar, or stuffy. While The Economist is a model of clear business writing, it can be stiff-upper-lippish. Annoyingly, it refuses to employ American usage in US editions of its what-they-insist-on-calling a newspaper. What image or idiom will make it clearer? Is this image fresh enough to have an effect? And he will probably ask himself two more: Could I put it more shortly? Have I said anything that is avoidably ugly?” Scrupulous writers will also notice that their copy is edited only lightly and is likely to be used. It may even be read.""

About the Author
ANN HEILMANN is Professor of English at the University of Hull, UK, where she directs the Centre for Victorian Studies. The author of New Woman Fiction (2000) and New Woman Strategies: Sarah Grand, Olive Schreiner, Mona Caird (2004), she has edited three essay collections, including Feminist Forerunners (2003), and is the co-editor of The Collected Short Stories of George Moore (with Mark Llewellyn, 2007) and of four anthologies, most recently Anti-Feminism in Edwardian Literature (with Lucy Delap, 2006). MARK LLEWELLYN is Senior Lecturer in English at the University of Liverpool, UK, Secretary to the British Association for Victorian Studies (BAVS), Editor of the Journal of Gender Studies (Routledge/Taylor and Francis), and Consultant Editor to Neo-Victorian Studies He has published widely on late-Victorian literature, particularly the work of George Moore; contemporary women's writing; and theorizations of the neo-Victorian: his most recent publications include the edited collections Metafiction and Metahistory in Contemporary Women's Writing (with Ann Heilmann, 2007) and Conflict and Difference in Nineteenth-Century Literature (with Dinah Birch, 2010). Mark is currently working on a book entitled Incest in English Culture, 1835-1908.

Well, it was for a good cause

"The Doctor Who Cookbook" was conceived as a fundraiser for some charity (I don't have the book in front of me right now, so I don't remember which). TDWC, like many celebrity and TV show based cookbooks, is of interest to rabid fans only. In addition...well, I'm going to indulge in a bit of cultural bashing here and say that British cooking is not something that most non-Brits like. Also, there's the cringe-provoking tendency to give the items cutesy Who-based names. I guess the writers assume that all Who fans are aged 9 and under....
For the total whacko Who fan who owns everything already.

About the Author
David W. Allen is the GIS manager for the City of Euless, Texas. He has taught at Tarrant County College since 1999, where he helped found one of the first GIS degree programs in Texas and establish a state standard for GIS degree programs. He is the author of Getting to Know ArcGIS ModelBuilder (Esri Press, 2011) and the co-author of GIS Tutorial 3: Advanced Workbook (Esri Press, 2010).

A beginner text at best

Quite a few reviews refer to this workbook as an excellent intermediate source for applied spatial statistics, however, I couldn't disagree more. If you can successfully navigate the help sections included with your ESRI ArcGIS installation, you simply DO NOT need this book. Sure the data that is provided is helpful, but it is not remarkably different from the data provided in the free tutorials available through ESRI. If anything, this text lacks the theoretical framework necessary to understand the statistical operations, as well as any guidance for interpretation of the results,... which is possibly the single most difficult aspect of spatial statistics in the first place. It also provides no help for more advanced statistic tests such as exploratory regression or ordinary least squares regression. If you must support ESRI press, start with Andy Mitchell's "The ESRI Guide to GIS Analysis, Volume 2" to develop a solid framework (though this text also glosses over many important details). For a more thorough and relevant source try the ESRI Spatial Statistics Resource page at: [...]. Make sure and watch the videos a few times through and work though the tutorials before you start with your own data. Also, for a truly intermediate/advanced-level set of tutorials and tools try Luc Anselin's Geoda program relased through Arizona State University: [...]. While it has a steep learning curve, it is nowhere as obtuse as R or CrimeStat and nicely supplements the tools available through ArcGIS. Best of all, its free and well documented!

Great for beginners!

I took a class on this software and used this book for the semester. I feel like I know the material very well know because of how this book is written. I like that it goes step by step, giving detailed explanations and pictures to guide you. Everything is very practical. Great essential tool if you are a beginner in learning GIS. I will be keeping the book to go back through and touch up on all the lessons.

About the Author
LONNIE C. LUDEMAN, PhD, received his doctorate from Arizona State University and is Professor Emeritus of electrical and computer engineering at New Mexico State University. In 1993, he was a Fulbright Scholar at the Aristotle University in Thessaloniki, Greece. He is the author of Fundamentals of Digital Signal Processing, which won Choice magazine's award for Outstanding Engineering Book of the Year.

Way to many errors

This book has an excellent choice of topics, use of figures, and numerous well presented examples. It would be an excellent book, except it has so many errors it is almost useless. I am working though the early chapters and examples as a refresher, since I am familiar already with this material, and have found errors in almost every section. Often the errors are subtle, an exponent missing here or an incorrect integration bound there, including in key equations, making them very difficult to find if you don't already know the material and are willing to work through it in detail. I have completely lost confidence in the book. When I go to later chapters, which are new material to me, I never know if my misunderstanding is the result of my missing something or Ludeman's unbelievably sloppy production. Hopefully he will come out with a second edition, and actually bother to proofread it.
