A concise, well organized treat to casual philosophy

Despite its small size, this book is jam-packed of content, organized in a very logical fashion. The book starts with the most common-sense notion of pleasure being the central part of life, and from here takes you through a fascinating journey of realization as the values of knowledge, achievements, virtues, friendships, love and death is revealed to you. Thomas Hurka is a brilliant writer who knows how to balance sophisticated concepts with enjoyable and to-the-point paragraphs.

The book is divided into several chapters each focusing on one topic. Every chapter starts with a general and broad concept, and narrows down and takes closer look at how each individual aspect of the topic can affect the quality of life. Many references to various philosophers from ancient to contemporary is used, which are also listed as further readings at the end of each chapter. Some chapters also incorporate diagrams to help with concepts, making the content of the book very accessible by those unfamiliar with the theories of academic philosophy.

The book is written from a philosophical perspective, but involves also bits from psychology, sociology, etc. It is written intended for a casual audience, which makes it a very easy and enjoyable read. If you are one of those who are looking to find various opinions on what the good life is, this book is a must read.

Enjoyable and Thought Provoking

Who doesn't want to know more about pleasure, satisfaction and happiness and how to achieve them ?

This book is part treatise, part blueprint for living a more satisfying life. It is not a step by step self help book, but there are plenty of those out there already. This is a thought provoking and dare I say"pleasurable" read. Though Hurka is an academic, this book doesn't have a text book sort of feel. But it does make you ponder what a "good life" looks like and how we all might have one.

Professor of philosophy Thomas Hurka ponders what makes a good life. He writes simply, explaining philosophical concepts with understandable examples: Chocolate and sex, for instance, are good. Hurka layers his concepts, one upon another, weaving a modern and interesting - if not necessarily compelling to the reader who is not philosophically minded - report on what comprises a good life. More practical readers might prefer tips or parameters, but this isn't a self-help guide. It's more of a discussion, with points to consider and directions for reaching your own conclusions. Hurka's ability to cite Kant, Socrates and other philosophical giants without getting bogged down helps readers consider theories they might find otherwise inaccessible. getAbstract suggests this book to managers, executives, entrepreneurs and armchair philosophers seeking gentle guidance toward a more rewarding life.

I love this comic... it shows us the evils of culture, and addresses one of the common defenses for circumcision

Yes yes yes, it DOES addres a practice that jews HAPPEN to practice, but I think any antisemetism the author, or myself, feel, is because of Circumcision rather then us attacking circumcision because of wanting to destroy their culture, way of life, or some such BS

This is a very cliché comic book story that has been hilariously reframed within an anti-genital mutaliation context. The Anti Defamation League and their affiliates claim it's anti-Semitic, but their press releases indicate they're more upset that it doesn't conform to the standard narrative of blondes as Nazi villains or rich high school bullies vis a vis blameless Jewish underdogs. Hell, the villians look more like Mormons dressed up as Orthodox Jews for Halloween than anti-Semitic caricatures. Third Reich propagandists would not approve.

They're baaack! For years we thought it was right wing anti semitism but it's been left wing all along! We know that nazis were socialists and so are left wingers! Now we are sure!

As an RN for 18 years, I'm 46, I know the difficulties of maintaining sanitary conditions with NON circumcised men. I also see men of all ages voluntarily getting circumcised. Smegma, yes SMEGMA, abounds when 'it' cannot be kept clean, and strangulation occurs if the foreskin is not replaced properly after cleaning, it's a pain in the butt! So medically it's a sound practice. And please don't compare circumcision with genital mutilation for women, its not even in the same ballpark! Female mutilation is grotesque, demeaning, cruel and forever damaging! I have NEVER heard a man say "I wish I wasn't circumcised"

DO buy this and show everyone you know and then some, spread the word that hatred for Jews are proliferating among the democrats, and history is about to repeat itself in OUR lifetime!

About the Author

i think of the bad guy in Crow Michael Wincott

I think they keep missing on the Voice characters. I think Sevatar was not properly done. When i think Sevatar, i think of the bad guy in Crow Michael Wincott. The stories overall were okay. nothing to get to excited about. I think they fell short on Luther's character as well. I think the cover art kind of pulled me the rest of the way in.

If you care to read my Regency novels in order, they are The Virgin's Auction, A Plan of Seduction, The Rake Enraptured and Teaching the Earl, though the latter two are roughly parallel. However each is a standalone book and there's no need to read them in a particular sequence if you prefer not.

This is a variation of the "I'll be true to my dead love forever" trope. The hero, recently inheriting an earldom and a mountain of debts, breaks it off with his 'secret' fiancee because she has no money and he now needs buckets of it. She pitches a royal fit and commits suicide. He's distraught and immediately begins his hunt for an heiress.

Plot hole #1: He and the fiancee had been close, life-long friends, so why didn't he know she was seriously unstable? Instead, he had only heard rumors?

Michael finds his heiress, Elizabeth, and puts on a good enough act to entice the starry-eyed little thing down the aisle. Then, beginning with their abrupt departure from their wedding breakfast, he treats her like dirt and will have nothing to do with her. End of his thespian skills.

Plot hole #2: Michael vowed on the dead fiancee's grave that he would have no marital relations with his wife. He harps on his honor and duty, but what about his vows to Elizabeth? He had told the dead fiancee he was duty bound to provide an heir. But honor and duty only seem to come into play to fulfill "the vow." Inconsistency going on here.

Regardless of his sorrow and feelings of guilt, there is no excuse for his wretched treatment of Elizabeth, which she puts up with way too long, in my opinion. But even tolerant Elizabeth hits the road when he tells her he doesn't want her, just her money.

Elizabeth is now in London attending social functions. Michael follows along a few weeks later, thinking he'll help her adapt. He finds her in a dark corridor of a home in which a ball is in progress; he jams her against a wall and starts to have his way with her. She stands for that? She actually apologizes to *him* because she was in the corridor with a man who'd dragged her there AGAINST HER WILL? She's now gone from tolerant to doormat.

Michael breezes along, escorts her here and there, and they work in some sex (darn that vow.) Elizabeth does deliver a couple of excellent speeches to Michael.....the best parts of the novel, in my opinion. They sparkle. But she lets him off scot-free really. He's a jerk. So many pages are devoted to Michael's suffering, that not enough is left to explore his and Elizabeth's relationship, or for him to grovel! The result is an uneven story.

Christopher Alexander is now The Earl of CarhamptonHe has to tell Sophie his best friend he can not marry her he has to marry for money. She goes crazy something she had to be hiding from him. She tells him she will die if he marries someone else.He has to promise her he won't sleep with his wife or have children. She does kill herself and he is left with guilt. Elizabeth Cross is having her first season and she is picked by him to be his wife since she has more money than anyone else. She thinks he is marrying her to have a real marriage.
He refuses to to have sex with her or spend much time with her.he spends his time getting the farm land in shape. She finally leaves him and goes to London after he finally tells her he wanted only her money.
He finally goes to find her and finds her in another arms not sitting home as he thought. Elizabeth is finally getting to him but the guilt over SophIa remains. Elizabeth is not giving up but can she convince him to make her his wife in all ways and forget SophIa?

This book shows that if you start a relationship on the proverbial wrong foot it can still turn out right if you work at it with determination and lots of love. The story flowed right allowing from the beginning to the end. The story ended at just the right time and place. A lot of stories end way to soon and leave you wondering what happened next or why it ended.
