Hope there's a sequel

Well, I got this while looking for Skinny Bitches Diet books, sort of fits but was clearly a chic-lit novel. I figured it was a self publish because of the cover, but it looked fun so I got the kindle version.

I'm actually pretty pleased with the book. There are a few editing issues, open parenthesis and spelling errors but the writing quality is very professional and well done, that I didn't hold the editing against it.

The characters are very likeable, well the ones that are meant to be. The ones you are supposed to hate, you do, quite easily. I think it's a good idea of what life is for the 40 year old newly divorced professional trying to start a new life. Granted there are some bumps in the road, and since it's set in Boston, well actually a suburb of Boston, you do get glimpses into the anorexic attitudes from the severely rich and bored. However our heroine does not succumb to the 'don't eat' attitude and may not be jumping for joy over her curves, she certainly feels they are a realistic part of herself and will sit right where they are. It is however a bit sad that her group of close friends has a running joke over their high society friends/acquaintances who clearly have an eating disorder. But you don't feel much sympathy for them either.

I think some might find the pace of the story to be a bit slow moving, it does tend to go about her daily routine, but I didn't mind that because it gave you a glimpse into her social life and how easily she made friends and such. It also gave you a glimpse into a real life. It wasn't the typical chic lit of 'omgeverythingishappeningallatonceanditstragedyafteranother!' experience that tends to happen in every chic lit book. It was a real and believable story about an average woman. We work, it's kinda boring, we hang out with our pals and gossip, we complain about work, we have kids, pets, irritating people we have to deal with, and end up having to care or deal with irritating situations. It was nice. It's not a paranormal story, it's not a story about a rich 20 something who ends up having a huge awesome job in Manhattan, it's about a real woman who has her normal life. And she's successful. She has lovely friends, an awesome child, an idiot ex-husband, and a job she isn't crazy about but that pays the bills. And there's nothing wrong or boring about that. I like it.

For me, it's a very interesting look into Boston living. And I liked how Pippin was able to use their issues and status against them. I have grown to really like these characters, I really hope she makes a sequel.

Miss Janet, kudos to you on your great American novel. I wish there were more story at the end. I think if you are sad to find the last page it was time well spent reading the previous ones. I look forward to another story from you if your family can stand more pop tart dinners.

I couldn't stop reading. Would recommend to anyone who doesn't love political correctness, but rather values honesty and common sense. Pippin reminds me of my best friend and I wish more women were like her.

I have read all of the Owned books by both Ms Downs and McLeod and was hoping that this one kept on the same lines - lottery, humans, aliens and plenty of angst and a whole lot of sex. Did it disappoint me, no, although it was slightly different with having Kelr born from two different species so he did not have the full traits of either of the species.

We have Jack who knows that his silence is the only way he will be able to get out of prison for a crime he did not commit and then Kelr was a bit of an enigma. He could see that Jack was attracted to him and he also knew what he was thinking (scary) – how to seduce Mr Yum.

Because Kelr was from two different species he was worried how he would get on with his human especially if he wanted to procreate and have sex – whenever he touched someone he was be crippled with pain so he had the fine art of self-masturbating down to a T.

It was interesting to read how they both reacted to the vibrations of their mutual attraction; this is how Kelr can interact with another being. Personally I did not like the way that Kelr manipulated Jack in to turning off his desires and transferring it to eating or sleeping but it did make the story interesting and actually only made me love Jack even more. When they finally got physical it was all I could ask for, mutual love and understanding with each other.

Jack did try so hard to understand Kelr but he just kept getting pushed back and back. Then what happens when someone pushes you do far you start to push back and that is what Jack did. The question you would have to ask yourself is what would you do or what lengths would you go through to touch the one you loved?

This book tells that story of Kelr and Jack and the lengths they go through to get their HEA. But what Jack had to go through to get there was very sad and heavy as Kelr just seemed to push him at others all the time trying to find him another mate.

As I've said in my other reviews of the Owned books two is always better than one and even more so with the extras that Kelr can bring to the relationship.

A history lesson in every selection, famous and infamous

Rhino Records put out this 4-CD set a few years ago of excerpts from major speeches and radio broadcasts from the last 100 years. From Winston Churchill's famous broacasts to Ronald Reagan, from the landing on the moon in 1969 to Thomas Edison making the first recording of Mary Had a Little Lamb, this has a lot of interesting and useful things. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech is included; JFK's inaugural address still resonates with hope this many years later. The selections included four themes: the political arena, the changing world, the dreams/ inspirations/ accomplishments, and the best of times, and the worst of times. The last includes Neville chamberlain's hopes that war in 1939 would be avoided, followed immediately by his announcement that war has begun. Some of the selections are edited into shorter lenghts, which can be unfortunate, but overall, the collection is outstanding. If you are a history buff, or curious as to what makes a good speech, this set will prove very useful.

Adequate introduction to perspectives on peace & justice

Purchased this book for a class. It provides a solid overview of contemporary issues, although I find a number of Thompson's conclusions dubious. (His confidence in international/multilateral institutions and agreements is unwarranted; the assertion that "American colonialism seems indistinguishable from European colonialism" (p. 16) ignores the far larger scope of the latter.) Published in 2003, the material is somewhat out of date (i.e. no analysis of the impact of the U.S. invasion & occupation of Iraq). The synopsis of Catholic Social Teaching isn't bad, although the book certainly could have devoted much more space to the topic. (For a comprehensive treatment of Catholic Social Teaching, I recommend the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church.)

It's the bullseye book I've been looking for

Uncompromising, fearless, and accurate--this is the one I've waited for. Finally, a Christian who boldly tackles issues like sweatshops, the World Bank and IMF, militarization and its effects on poverty, America's role in arms sales to the Third World, the environment, and world peace. The facts, figures, and graphs are there for anyone who wants them, but it's not a dull government-style book. It's rebellious and astounding, and makes you feel like taking action. It's also loaded with relevant scripture examinations and lists of resources (organizations, books, nonprofit agencies) who attend to the issues Thompson raises.
Enough with silly sunday School classes about stories and opinions; THIS should be the textbook of sunday School classes of the truly justice-minded churches of America.

A great Introduction

This book by Prof. Thompson fills a gap in Catholic teaching on peace and justice. I would hope that this book gets wide circulation among clergy, especially deacons in the Catholic Church. This book gives a very good historical overview of the wide range of issues that Christian peacemakers face in the world.
As good as this book is as an introduction, I think an exploration of the fundamental principles of Catholic Social teaching would round off the presentation. Also, there is a need to discuss practical application of Catholic teaching such as Princpled Nonviolence and grassroots praxis.
The range and depth of the book is a welcome addition to a growing attempt by Catholic theologians and ethicists to apply the Gospel to the "signs of the times". Kudos for a job well done ! One will eagerly await the second volume of Christian praxis.

A Beautiful Beautiful Book for Dreaming!!!!!

This book is too sumptuous for words. The Hotel Danieli is one of the great classical fairy-tale palace/hotels, the like of which will never be built again. The money, materials, and craftsmanship for constructing something like this just don't exist anymore. This is a beautiful large coffee-table book, but you won't leave it on the coffee table; you'll take it to bed and gaze upon the incredible photographs just before you drift off to sleep--then you'll spend the night dreaming that you are there in the Hotel Danieli and you'll never have to leave. The book is very light on text and wisely focuses on the photography. I would have liked a little more information on the history of the palace/hotel, but given the choice, I'd rather devote the space to the amazing full-color plates; you can always Wiki the history later, but a computer picture or a Kindle CANNOT do justice to this--you must have the full-sized book. A stay at the Danieli is out of reach for most of us, but with this book you can visit anytime for far less than the price of a night. The text is printed in several languages, including English. It is an expensive book, but well worth it because it cost quite a bit to produce such a quality hardcover photography volume. You won't be sorry you spent the bucks for it. My only complaints are (1) the book lacks a double-page color photograph of the legendary staircase, and (2) it isn't five times thicker than it is, to allow for more luxuriating in astounding architectural and historical splendor (of course, then, it would weight about 30 pounds, but that's fine by me).

HOOK by Marie York, there are no words, this book is hot and just when you think it can't get any hotter, the book ends and leaves your jaw on the ground.

The story in this book is very well written and well developed and the plot is very fast paced that before you know it you will find yourself at the end of the book and you will be like what just happened. The characters in this book are very well written and have amazing chemistry from the moment they meet, Mila and Knox will be perfect together once Mila realizes it and lets Knox in.

Knox out for a night on the town with his friends to celebrate his latest MMA win and he finds himself at a local strip bar, Knox does not usually like spending time in the strip bars, but that's where his friends wanted to go. From the moment Knox sees Mila he wants her, and his friends arrange for him to spend some "private time" with her, which only increases Knox's wants. Mila wants nothing to do with Knox, she has been doing it on her own for years, taking care of her younger sister, but struggling every step of the way. once Knox turns up in her life at the bar, he seems to turn up every where every time she needs rescuing. Slowly but surely Mila lets Knox into her life, but she never really lets down all of her walls. I cannot wait for the next book in the series, Knox and Mila's story is going to be one heck of a bumpy ride.

Hook by Marie York was my first read by this author, I have all of her books on my kindle but life has got in the way and I have not had time to read them, but after HOOK sucked me I will be making time to read the rest of her books. I would give HOOK 4/5 stars.

Love meets in all the strange places.

When Knox joins his friends at a strip club to celebrate his win as a fighter, he is bored with the conversation and decides to look at the woman on the stage… little did he know she would have some effect on him.

Mila, the stripper on the stage, is just doing what she has to do to pay the bills and support her 16 year old sister. She doesn’t like to take “charity”, so when Knox helps her out with something… the way she pays him back is “priceless”.

Then you have Mackenzie, who is Mila’s 16 year old sister who apparently hates the world. She is being a rebellious teenager and causing all kinds of problems for Mila.

This is a great start to a series that I know I will truly enjoy if it continues on the track that it is on. It leaves you hanging wondering what is going to happen next, but not to the point that you want to scream because you are left NEEDING to know. It ended at an interesting point that I wasn’t expecting. I am not sure how what happened, happened… so now I want to know more.

The attraction between Mila and Knox is HOT, and Mila tries to run from it, and Knox isn’t going to allow it to happen. I HOPE HE DOESN’T.

I received an ARC of this book from Mark My Words Book Publicity in exchange for an honest review and as part of the book's release promotions.

I have to admit that I haven't read anything from Marie York before. I've read and heard about her but not read from her. I know she writes MMA/fighter romance novels, so I decided to jump in and read this new series. I think I made a good decision doing so because I really enjoyed this book.

Hook is a great way to start the series. We are introduced to the main characters in a way that makes any reader intrigued. Their first meeting was written really well. The development of every character was clear. Even the secondary characters were also interesting. I liked the heroine because she was a woman who was brave enough to do things that other people wouldn't be able to do. Desperate times truly call for desperate measures, but the story showed that the heroine was a great girl underneath.

Some of the things that happened in this book completely surprised me. I think it's a good thing. With all that happened, I am more than excited to get to the next book and find out what's in store for everybody else.

Dylanophiles have long tired of (..) literary critics saying that Dylan is "not really a poet; this book does something to put the lie to the accusation. It IS poetry, though not in the "conventional" sense. The majority of the book is written in a style of prose poem/poem/prose poem (repeating the cycle for however long the poem is), and then closing the piece with a written letter signed by some character from Dylan's imagination. As you may have surmised, the prose poems are of the type that Dylan wrote for the linear notes to Bringing It All Back Home and Highway 61 Revisited. And yes, the poems are in the style of the poems that Dylan wrote for The Times They Are A-Changin' and Another Side. Precious little of it is literal; it is almost wholly written in the rambling, seeming stream-of-consciousness style that Dylan introduced in the aforementioned prose poems. He was highly into writing allegerical fables at that time, and this book abounds in them. Dylan fans will certainly enjoy this book a lot. It gives a peak into his creativity and writing process like nothing else really does. This is Dylan unpolished, not buried beneath the stream of re-writes that produced such masterpieces as "Visions of Johanna." There are references to many of his songs and lyrics within the poetry - whether this came from those, or vice versa, is anyone's guess, but it's a fascinating glimpse into Dylan in any case. You can get something out of these poems. They are fun to read, and have a quick, rolling meter and cadence that all of Dylan's poetic works seem to have, and this makes for interesting and thought-provoking seat-of-the-pants reading. Dylan fans will revel in it. Probably, those who are not already taken with the author will not be converted by this book. This book is actually a less-than-stellar book in the eyes of many (admittedly, by Dylan himself, who held off publishing it for 5 years), and, though interesting and thought-provoking, it is a very ornate and abstract work, without also offering the insights into life that his lyrics have always offered. So the merits of this book for those who are not already Dylan fans is questionable. On the other hand, it is certainly essential for Dylanophiles, and it certainly is a further contribution from Dylan to the field of poetry, and a more legitimate one in the eyes of many. Here's hoping that it helps Bob win the Nobel Prize for Literature that he so geniunely and truly deserves. It is not a cultural opinion, but indeed a fact, that Dylan did more for poetry than anyone else in the 20th century - at least in the sense of bringing it to the masses. And he certainly re-defined popular music as we know it. This book is a further gem in his canon, and helps show a small part of the reason for why Dylan means so much to so many different people.
