A good read in Venice

I read the book and enjoyed it while visiting Venice. Well written, insightful, and combines travel and art information with a human story and a mystery. Something for everyone.

Different

This novel was not what I expected. It was better. I really enjoyed both sides of the novel. It tells both the story of a Jew and his experience with the Angel Raphael BC and a modern woman's life-enhancing trip to Venice. Her self awareness grows with her exposure to life lived with the everydayness of Venetians. Her eye- opening experience with the perfect gentleman and her push towards a life well-lived rather than stepping back into bitterness was more satisfying than I expected. So the book offers surprises, though I've read the BC story before somewhere. Thoroughly enjoyable with a satisfying end.

Life (and Death) in Venice

Middle-aged schoolmistress Julia Garnet, grieving after the death of her long-term friend and flatmate (but not, we infer, her lover), moves to Venice with a six-month rental on a small apartment off the Grand Canal. Miss Garnet is a spinster, a Communist and an atheist. She very quickly falls in love - not once but twice.

Her first love, an art historian, proves to be an unwise choice. Her second love, depicted in painting and sculpture in various churches and galleries, is the Archangel Raphael who famously accompanied the apocryphal prophet Tobias across the land of Assyria to meet the demonically possessed woman he was destined to love.

Salley Vickers alternates the story of Miss Garnet and the people she meets in Venice with a re-telling in vernacular English of Tobias's ancient odyssey. And as the city with its canals casts a spell over Julia's heart, this biblical romance frees her spirit - her soul - from a dormancy that has lasted her entire life.

The writing of this beguiling novel is elegant but unfussy, the kind of writing, you feel, that Jane Austen might be producing if she were alive today. In contrast to Tobias's cinematic adventures, events in modern Venice move at an unhurried pace, but Miss Garnet's 'awakening' makes her an endearing if not entirely lovable heroine. Defying categorization, this is a spiritual quest that spans almost three millennia.

This is not your ordinary textbook…It is eclectic, practical, in places a handbook, a guide to fieldwork…and, perhaps most engaging to me, in places the authors offer personal views as well as more strongly worded opinions. The former often relate to evaluation of alternative approaches, or formulations, of specific solutions to specific hydrologic problems...I hope any student will enjoy, not just profit from, the careful advice given to those involved in their first observations of rivers in the field…

Terrible, confusing textook

This is by far the worst textbook I have ever been forced to use. I am completing a M.S. degree, and between all of my undergraduate and masters classes, this text has been the most confusing and difficult to use. The equations in the textbook are frequently not explained fully, sometimes they wrap around more than one line of text which makes it difficult to know if it is part of the same equation. The questions at the end of each chapter are written in a confusing manner and it is difficult to know exactly what they are asking. The examples in each chaper do not go through each step of the problem, it will jump from one assumption to the next and not explain how it went from A to B. The index is not accurate and does not point the reader to the correct places in the textbook for concepts. Overall this is a really terrible textbook and has left hating the subject of hydrology.

Mistakes in the book - which is why I rented it from Amazon. Glad I did!

Wasn't impressed with this book. This book had many mistakes which was quite annoying. Didn't have a choice, was required to have the book for class. It got to the point where I would make assumptions to what the author was getting at for the problems in the book. Units and terms were incorrect for some problems. This led me to rent the book instead of buying. I am glad I did - I have no use for a book that I can't rely on. I wouldn't doubt that the errors are on purpose to justify the creation of new edition$.

Black Swan Rising

Fans of urban fantasy, if you haven't read this, you should. First and foremost, Black Swan Rising felt real. I could imagine everything that Garet was experiencing actually happening. So many urban fantasy novels are fantastical to the point of unbelievability, and it takes away from the fact that they are supposed to take place in our world, in our time. That is not the case here. Garet is an interesting character with an interesting family, friends, and hobbies. She isn't the most multidimensional character I've ever read, but I feel like this story is more plot centered than character based, so I won't complain. She handles herself well in a crisis, makes her own decisions, and learns quickly. She doesn't know martial arts and isn't ridiculously tough. The plot is excellent as well. When I think back on it now it seems really simple, but I was engrossed in this book completely and hung on every word. The writing grabbed me from the start. The description of the Fair Land was so beautiful I had to write it down, and the description of the vampire sight in the night was one of the most realistic and gripping I've read (and I've read plenty of vampire books). From there the book keeps up it's pace with Garet learning abilities and finding out more about her mother and the John Dee situation. I feel that this is what urban fantasy should be. A believable main character, in a realistic situation, with a bit of the paranormal mixed in. Black Swan Rising doesn't have a trash talking heroine that gives everyone and attitude and has every guy in town drooling over her. There is no investigative agency or mystery here, just a heartfelt standalone story. I love it.

Black Swan Rising: A Great Read!

When I read the back cover of this book, I truly didn't think I'd get into it. A hedge fund manager/vampire in New York? But after reading the first chapter, I was hooked and the story just got better and better. This is such a fun read -- filled with mystery, fantasy, suspense and humor -- a real surprise that has me chomping at the bit for the next book in the series. Times are tough right now. If you need a good temporary escape via a well-written novel, put your dime down on Black Swan Rising. And if the authors come to your city to read, don't miss them. I saw them in San Francisco and their presentation was fascinating.

Very enjoyable!

I love the books of Carol Goodman filled with marvelous stories that have always verged on the fantastical. I have also enjoyed the poetry that one sometimes finds within them, written by her husband, the poet Lee Slonimsky. The two of them have teamed up here to write a book together, under the name "Lee Carroll." And what a book!

The main character, Garet James (whoopie! a new nickname for my name, Margaret) and her father live in New York City and run a small Gallery. On the verge of financial ruin, Garet finds herself on a rainy evening stepping into a small antiques shop, run by a man named John Dee. From there a wonderful story unfolds about lost love persisting, the magic underlying our lives, duties crossing many generations, vampires, and all the wonderful little plot treasures that come in a fine, traditional fantasy novel.

The authors know the form very well and satisfy the reader completely. The only fault I can find with the book is that it ended! I wanted more of these characters!
